The Duo emerged from the recording sessions for the recent documentary series about Abraham Kuyper, ‘Om de Oude Wereldzee’. Both musicians bring their own compositions, and improvise on the interface between the Arab and Western music.

Tony Overwater

Tony Overwater is één van Nederlands meest markante bassisten. Hij is een veelzijdig musicus en componist die zich zowel als solist, bandleider en begeleider profileert in Nederland en ver daarbuiten. Tony Overwater studeerde cum laude af op het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag en is onder andere onderscheiden met de VPRO Boy Edgar prijs. Naast zijn samenwerking met Jazz musici als Maarten Ornstein, Rembrandt Frerichs, Yuri Honing, Karin Hammar en Paolo Fresu is Overwater vooral ook bekend voor zijn samenwerking met Arabische musici. Sinds de jaren negentig heeft hij zich verdiept in de Arabische klassieke muziek en werkte hij samen met een keur aan Arabische musici waaronder de Libanese zangeres Rima Khcheich.

Nizar Rohana

Palestinian born oud player and composer Nizar Rohana studied at the Jerusalem Academy for Music and the Hebrew University. He completed his master’s degree in 2006 while specializing in the music of the great Egyptian oud player and composer Mohammad Al-Qasabji. 

Before moving to the Netherlands in 2013, Nizar has been a prominent oud player on the Palestinian music scene for many years and gained recognition worldwide through performances in countries such as Japan, Morocco, Egypt, Turkey, the USA and in Europe. 

Nizar’s compositions and improvisations are deeply rooted in the melodic and rhythmic possibilities inherent in the oud, yet they reveal refreshing new expressions and playfulness with form. His debut album Sard (Narration in Arabic, released in 2008) gained wide popularity among oud music lovers in the Arab world and beyond.
